1. Frosty mornings and sunny days of the Armidale winter
If you wake up early enough during an Armidale winter you will see the sunrise over fields of icy grass, colourful red sunrises, and mist. It’s eerily beautiful and worth the effort to get out of bed. If you are really keen, one of our favourite things to do is to trek up to Point Lookout in the New England National park and see the sunrise over the mountains. It may be the most spectacular sunrise we’ve seen. They have walks that scale the side of the mountain with spectacular views from around 200m to a 15km trek.
Most frosty mornings are followed by sunny days, so dress well and bask in the rays of the winter sun.
2. Open fire places
Many of the restaurants in Armidale and the New England High Country know how to do winter properly with fire places perfect for sitting and enjoying a brew. Some of our favourite places that are sure to have a fire going on a cold winter’s night are Welder’s Dog (try their mulled wine or locally brewed beer); the White Bull (for a restaurant style pub meal), and the Wicklow.
3. Extreme High Altitude training
Armidale has an elevation of 1000m which makes it the highest city in Australia. With the help of the first class facilities of Sport UNE it makes it one of the best places to complete high altitude sports training. While we all know high altitude training is good for the lungs, try doing it in 5 degrees. You can run for 10km and (possibly) not even get a sweat up, black ice just adds to the adrenalin, and there are kilometres of low traffic areas and numerous public sporting fields to get your jog on!
4. Dress up
We have a saying where we’re from, “there’s no such thing as bad weather, just bad dress choice”, so layer up and enjoy the cool. There’s plenty of boutique shops in Armidale and Uralla that specialise in the winter climate, our favourites are the Uralla Wool Room , the Rag & Trader store and Turners.
5. Indulge during a chilly Armidale Winter
Winter is the perfect time to indulge in your favourite meals, and the New England High Country restaurants and cafes will look after you. We recommend the Red Grapevine for an Italian inspired menu, PJ Thai to get your Thai fix, Mung Hing’s for Chinese, and newcomers Paper Tiger for an original Asian inspired menu. For breakfast, join us at the City Centre Motor Inn for our free continental breakfast and indulge on fresh hot Pancakes every morning!
6. Best time to see the National Parks
An Armidale Winter is the best time to see the National Parks for a few reasons. While the New England National Park & Oxley Wild Rivers National parks are beautiful all year round, there are less snakes and flies during winter. There are also less people. So rug up and see some of the most spectacular gorges in Australia.
